Is your foods making you sick?
Everyone seems to be talking about going “green” and eating organic foods. The media talks about it; the manufacturers advertise it. But do you know why organic foods is better?
Food today is produced on mass factory farms. The “normal” farming process uses massive amounts of pesticides and chemical fertilizers that kill soil life, reducing the nutritional value of the crop, in addition to poisoning the surrounding area with farm pollution which eventually, otherwise know as poison, ending up in the ocean. The point is that eating non organic foods are making us sick.
According to the National Academy of Science, “neurologic and behavioral effects may result from low-level exposure to pesticides.” Numerous studies show that pesticides can adversely affect the nervous system, increase the risk of cancer, and decrease fertility. Studies have found organic fruits and veggies to contain, for example, up to 30% more antioxidants, which promote immune and heart health.
What about meat? When you eat nonorganic meat, you are putting growth hormones (rBST or rBGH), antibiotic drugs, and waste contaminates in your body. Organic regulations prohibit the use of synthetic growth and breeding hormones in livestock. When you buy organic, the meat is leaner, hormones free, antibiotic free, as well as better tasting.
Still not convinced? Try this experiment for yourself. Buy some regular nonorganic meat and fruit and some organic meat and fruit and prepare it the same way. Then eat it, and see which one taste better. Everyone that tried this little experiment agrees organic taste so much better!
Can’t afford to buy everything organic? As a price conscious shopper, organic foods are more expensive because of the rigid production process (in order to be certified as organic). When you are trying to go organic, try doing it in phases. I always recommend focusing on buying organic meat, eggs, and dairy products first, due to the levels of growth hormones and toxins in the meat. Second, focus on the “dirty dozen”, which are the 12 most contaminated vegetables/fruits on the market.
12 Most Contaminated
- Peaches
- Apples
- Sweet Bell Peppers
- Celery
- Nectarines
- Strawberries
- Cherries
- Pears
- Grapes (Imported)
- Spinach
- Lettuce
- Potatoes
